HISTORY: António Carvalho da Silva Porto (1850‒1893) was a Portuguese painter who studied under João António Correia and Tadeau de Almeida Furtado in Portugal. Da Silva Porto traveled to Paris to continue his studies and fell under the spell of the naturalist Barbizon school of painting. He returned to Portugal where he helped establish the painting style of Portuguese realism.

OBVERSE: A beautifully rendered portrait of the artist by medalist João da Silva (1880–1960).

REVERSE: The words “AO INICIADOR DO RURALISMO PICTORICO EM PORTUGAL” encircles and frames a nude flautist playing to a reproduction of da Silva Porto’s masterful painting, Guardando o Rebanho (Guarding the Herd). His signature, “S. Porto,” is visible below the sheep on the left.
