M016
Bronze, UNC, Medallic Art Co., NY
76 mm (3”), 320 grams
HISTORY: The medal is an example of the powerful imagery of Abram Belskie (1907–1988) in medallic sculpture. His thorough understanding of anatomy and deep interest in the medical sciences opened the door to numerous commissions for portrait work and anatomical figures. Another medal on this website, designed by Belskie, is M035, “SOCIETY OF MEDALISTS #49, ART IS A GODDESS, BY ABRAM BELSKIE, 1954.”
OBVERSE: Bust of George Peabody (1795–1869), an influential merchant, financier, and philanthropist, on his induction into N.Y. University’s “Hall of Fame for Great Americans.”
REVERSE: “ENLIGHTENMENT–SCIENCE–HUMANITIES,” view of Hermes (also Roman god Mercury) riding atop a stallion, poised with a winged caduceus, surrounded by 13 stars.
