HISTORY: Issued by its National Bank, the West African nation, the Republic of Liberia, celebrated the 50th anniversary of India’s independence from British rule (1947–1997) with an issue of this $1 coin.

OBVERSE: The obverse displays the country’s crest, with “THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE” across the upper banner. Below the “19” are the initials “PM,” Pobjoy Mint, Ltd., Europe’s largest private mint.

REVERSE: The reverse shows Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869–1948) seated, weaving with his infamous loom, in front of the Taj Mahal.
