SOCIETY OF MEDALISTS #49, ART IS A GODDESS, BY ABRAM BELSKIE, 1954

HISTORY: Medal #49, issued May 1954 by The Society of Medalists (SOM), features the design of renowned sculptor Abram Belskie (1907–1988). London born, Belskie came to the United States in 1929 and was naturalized in 1939. He studied both sculpture and medicine, combining the two in creating sculptural medical teaching models. His work is in many public and private collections. Another medal on this website, designed by Belskie, is M016, “GEORGE PEABODY HALL OF FAME MEDAL, ABRAM BELSKIE, 1974.”

OBVERSE: From the SOM booklet, which accompanied the medal: “Art is a goddess who smiles upon all, though mostly on her votaries and whose charms are ever young,” written by Belskie in 1954. This medal is initialed “A©B.”

REVERSE: A square, calipers, and a hand holding a clay cutting tool ringed by a Shakespearean quote, “THIS ABOVE ALL TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE” (Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3).
