TOKENS: ZODIAC SIGN OF SAGITTARIUS COIN, VINTAGE, CIRCA 1960

M327

Copper alloys, VF

25.4 mm (1”), 9.3 grams

HISTORY: Sagittarius, the archer, is the third fire sign of the Zodiac. In Greek mythology, Sagittarius is the Centaur Chiron. Chiron mentored Achilles in archery, who rose to fame in the Trojan Wars. Normally, Sagittarius is acknowledged between November 22nd and December 21st; during a leap year (such as 1960), with an added day in February, the dates bump up from November 23rd to December 22nd.

OBVERSE: An archer (Achilles), wearing a bikini brief, just releases an arrow from his bow. Beneath his feet, in the exergue, is the astrological symbol of Sagittarius (see detail). Arrayed along the top of this token is the word “SAGITTARIUS” followed by the dates “NOV. 23 ‒ DEC. 22.”

REVERSE: From top to bottom, “YOUR LUCKY NUMBERS – 1 – 6”; a four-leaf clover; “YOU ARE A QUICK THINKER”; an upturned horse shoe; and “YOUR LUCKY DAY THURSDAY.” A star is located at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock.
