38.8 mm (1.53”)

HISTORY: The West African nation of the Republic of Sierra Leone celebrates the 28th Olympic Games with an issue of this $1 coin.

OBVERSE: Sierra Leone’s crest is displayed with “UNITY,” “FREEDOM,” and “JUSTICE” across the banner. Below “UNITY” are the initials “PM,” Pobjoy Mint, Ltd., Europe’s largest private mint.

REVERSE: Apollo stands in front of “XXVIII OLYMPIC GAMES” and “ATHENS 2004,” with a quiver slung at his left side, drawing his bow and arrow to his target, with an owl over his shoulders. In ancient Greece, the owl was a protector, accompanying armies into war. It was believed that, if an owl flew over a soldier before battle, it was a sign of victory.
