LOS ANGELES XXIII OLYMPIAD, DISCUS, ONE DOLLAR, 1983

W061

Silver Proof, AU (fingerprint lower right, obverse)

38 mm (1-1/2”), 31.1 grams

HISTORY: (Researching)

OBVERSE: “LOS ANGELES XXIII OLYMPIAD” frames a replica of the well-known Discobolus (Discus Thrower) sculpture. The original bronze was by Greek sculptor Myron, completed at the beginning of the Classic Period around 460-450 BC. Lost to history, Discobolus was made famous by numerous Roman copies recreated in marble over the next few centuries.

Beneath the feet are the initials “EJ”. To the left of Discobolus is the date and mint mark “1983” “S”, while to the right are the logos of the XXIII Olympiad and Olympic Games. “In God We Trust” and “LIBERTY” fill the lower right quadrant.

REVERSE: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” ring the reverse of this coin, framing a majestic bald eagle. To the eagle’s left are the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, and tucked away to the right are the initials “EJ • JM”.

EDGE: Reeded.
